As You Once Were
©2003 by Drew Kolar

Sandy sails and I'm looking for love
Sun-blue skies float above
Cobblestone trails, and I feel the wind on me
Once in my life, I feel at home
At peace and rested and once alone
Ships will call, but I cannot board just yet
The lighthouse beams from beside my soul
Empty streets, but I am whole
Dockside dreams, and everything in me swells

Hey you sitting at the edge of the sea
Come inside, I'm looking for me
The bow of the boat is calling your name
Suddenly the island isn't the same as you were
As you once were...

Broken wings, but no need to fly
And I don't need a reason why
Missed my boat and cannot swim to shore
Cliffside treasure at the ocean's gate
Tide is out, and it is late
Making footprints on the cool delicate sand

And so you swam back into life
And so you treaded light and found
A new beginning, a guiding star
And ocean-willing, you'll leave the ground

Lonely nights, a silent sky
That's what I need, I don't know why
If I spent forever, would they care?
The island calls to make me stay
The beacon is magnetic today
I can't stray for too long, but I feel fine

Hey you sailing or on the sand
Find me now and you can hold my hand
Shells and seawater speak soft the sound
Of what I'm looking for and haven't found where I was
Where I once was...
As I once was...
As you once were...
